Then…

You picked me up when I fell

And soothed my broken skin and broken heart.

You bought me new clothes for the first day of school

And walked me to the front door when I was scared.

You created a house that was a home

And cheered me on in every soccer game and ski race.

You taught me how to ride a bike, tie my shoelaces, throw a ball

And write thank you cards to show gratitude.

You built a treehouse in our backyard

And I would help you in the garden.

You drove me to ski team every Saturday morning

And bought me maple bars at Jo’s Donuts

Now…

I help you get up when you fall

And hold your hand when the path is uneven.

I slow my agenda down

And listen patiently to your needs.

I miss being able to ski

And walk anywhere with you.

I worry about your health

And every time you get behind the wheel.

I wish I could go back in time

And take away all your pain.

I miss being the vulnerable one

And miss the young you.

And…

We are building new memories.

We are slowing down to be grateful for all that we have.

We are making the most of the time we have left on this Earth.

We have the next generation to take care of and teach.

We have love and we have each other.

You and me. Me and you.

Then and now.
